Blairquhan Castle

Ayrshire on the west coast was the home of the national poet Robert Burns who died in 1796. His place place of birth was Alloway, a place of pilgrimage fro Generations of Burn lovers but also the Tam O’Sghanter Experience which brings to life Burns masterpiece of comic narrative, Tam O’Shanter. Burns night (25th January) is celebrated in several countries worldwide whereupon everyone celebrates by gorging on vast quantities of Haggis and Turnips.

Ayrshire is also the reputed birthplace of Robert the Bruce, the future King of Scotland and hero to the nation and dotted throughout the county visitors can find relics and landmarks which make claim on the Warrior king. Many respected his Immortal Memory on the bicentenary commemoration at his mausoleum in St Michael’s Kirkyard. Take a day out to visit both Blairquhan Castle and Culzean Castle in Maybole and Dean Castle in Kilmarnock or Kelburn Castle nr Largs.

From North Ayrshire you can catch a ferry across to the Isle of Arran which is well worth a visit. From the mainland The Peaks of Arran dominate the views to the west and they are just a short ferry ride away. Together with walking and climbing on the Goat Fell range, there are several attractions worth a visit on the Isle of Arran; Brodick castle, The Arran Heritage Museum and the Isle of Arran Distillery Centre.
