Abbeys and Priories in Devon, England.
Powderham Castle near Exeter
Situated in the centre of England’s beautiful West Country, Devon’s neighbours include Cornwall to the West and Somerset and Dorset to the East. In the North the moorland of Exmoor and the rugged coastline create a wilderness for exploration. Towns like Lynton and Barnstaple stand like beacons beckoning the traveller in at night. In land, the picture book countryside is quintessentially English and remains a favourite for both foriegn and domestic tourists alike. Further South towns like Totnes and Tavistock are steeped in history and many fascinating structures pre-dating the Norman Conquest have survived. There are many buildings of great ecclesiastical note like Buckfast Abbey (where the monks still make stained glass and tonic wine), Buckland Abbey (home of Sir Francis Drake) and Torre Abbey in the area known as the Riviera because of its climate.
