HIGHCLERE CASTLE, the ancestral home of the Earls of Carnarvon, is currently the setting for the popular TV series and Movie Downton Abbey. In the 1830s the 3rd Earl commissioned Sir Charles Barry to transform the original Georgian house into this pinnacled mansion. Today the 8th Earl and Countess take a keen interest in the castle and have added their own personal touches to the splendid State Rooms. With its ornate exterior, the house is rich in treasures yet retains the warmth of a family home
EGYPTIAN EXHIBITION
The 5th Earl of Carnarvon and Howard Carter spent 16 years excavating in and around the Valley of the Kings. In 1922 they discovered the tomb of Tutankhamun; the only royal tomb of a Pharaoh ever found intact. The Castle cellars have been redeveloped; firstly to display the family’s collection of Egyptian artefacts and secondly to take visitors on a ‘journey of discovery’ with views into the antechamber and over 60 incredible replicas of objects found in the tomb
PARK AND GARDENS: The magnificent parkland with its massive cedars was inspired by ‘Capability’ Brown. The gardens include the monks’ garden, the secret garden and a new wild flower meadow and arboretum.
Facilities
Historic House, Gardens, Tea Room, Film Locations, Highclere Castle, 65 miles west of London. The Castle has also been the location for the films; Eyes Wide Shut, Robin Hood Prince of Thieves, Tarzan and the Jeeves and Wooster series. The self-service Castle Tea Room is licensed and opens between 10.30 and 5.00pm during public opening dates; light lunches are served between 12.00 and 2.00pm. There is a gift shop and ample free parking. Please read the website carefully for opening dates as the Castle is only open to visitors during the Spring and Summer.
