A Historic Tour of South Norfolk

South Norfolk

South Norfolk is special and has much to offer the visitor whatever their interest ! Set amidst unspoilt countryside the bustling yet uncongested historic market towns have fine churches, traditional markets and excellent pubs, tea shops and hotels, many of which serve local produce and regional dishes.

Diss is a thriving market town bordered by a six acre mere with a wealth of architectural styles and a fine museum. Close by, Harleston nestling in the Waveney Valley was made famous by the local painter Sir Alfred Munnings.

Wymondham has a magnificent and unusual twin-towered Abbey, 17th century market cross, Heritage museum and charming historic railway station. A few miles further afield brings the visitor to the delightful small town of Hingham, the birthplace of Abraham Lincoln’s forefathers.

A visit to Loddon, in the Southern Broads provides a chance to get afloat and discover a new world ruled by the tides and seasons, home to wildlife including herons, water voles and otters. Hire a cruiser from one of the boatyards and just explore!

Whether you seek tranquillity or activity the enchanting scenery at Whitlingham Country Park and Little Broad has it all, here you can enjoy walking and cycling the well-marked routes. Expansive marshes and the Ted Ellis nature reserve in Surlingham give the visitor a taste of one of the last remaining tidal marshes, its wild remoteness encourages a variety of flora and fauna.

South Norfolk has many other excellent visitor attractions; halls, gardens, windmills, art & craft galleries set amongst the charming and uncongested picture postcard villages. Not to be missed; Raveningham Hall & Gardens, 100th Bomb Group Memorial Museum, Burston Strike School, the Roman town Venta Icenorum at Caistor St. Edmunds, and Bressingham Steam Experience & Gardens, which also hosts the ‘Dad’s Army Collection’.
So if you are looking to escape the bustle and enjoy an unhurried pace of life then South Norfolk can provide the perfect base from which to explore the Broads, Norwich, Norfolk and Suffolk.
