Liverpool lies at the heart of England’s Northwest and, having been awarded European Capital of Culture 2008, is on its way to becoming a premier European city break destination. Famed for its sport and music, Liverpool is also home to stunning architecture, unique culture, wonderful heritage and rich maritime legacy.
The city that overlooks the Mersey has used its seafaring history to craft a unique collection of tourist attractions that includes more museums, theatres, galleries and listed buildings than any other UK city outside the capital. From the Empire Theatre (the largest two-tier theatre in Europe) to the Anglican Cathedral (at 330ft high the largest in Europe), Liverpool genuinely caters for all.
Naturally enough in the birthplace of the Beatles, there are numerous attractions dedicated to the memories of the world’s greatest band. Visitors can recall the sights and sounds of Merseybeat in venues like The Beatles Story at the Albert Dock complex. You can even take a Magical Mystery Tour of former Fab Four locations, and a tour of the National Trust-owned homes of John Lennon and Sir Paul McCartney.
Also owned by The National Trust is the magnificent Speke Hall. Dating back to 1490, Speke Hall is widely regarded as one of the finest half-timbered mansions in Britain. Set in a tranquil oasis of gardens and woodland on the banks of the Mersey, it features naturally grown mazes to while away those hazy summer days.
The Liverpool region is well known for its love of sport, with two Premiership football clubs, 2 Super League rugby clubs and Aintree and Haydock racecourses. But the region is also the perfect place for golf, too. Home to England’s Golf Coast, here you’ll find seven championship courses (including the Royals Birkdale and Liverpool), plus a further 160 courses within an hours drive.
If you take the short trip out of Liverpool then you can experience the picturesque paradise of Port Sunlight Village in Wirral, the Victorian splendour of Southport, the industrial heritage of St Helens or go wild in Knowlsey Safari Park!
With all this it’s no surprise Liverpool has evolved into one of the most vibrant and exciting tourist destinations in the UK.
