Historic Worcestershire

Worcestershire is a great place to step back in time to a bygone era and cherish the delights of days gone by.

There is a great selection of historic houses with fantastic gardens to explore. Hanbury Hall (National Trust) is a delightful early 18th century William and Mary style house boasting magnificent staircase murals painted by Sir James Thornhill. Witley Court & Gardens (English Heritage) once one of England's great country houses, today stands as a spectacular ruin with a beautiful garden and amazing fountains. On the same site is Great Witley Church, Britain's finest Baroque church with amazing ceilings painted by Antonio Bellucci. Croome Park (National trust), "Capability" Browns first complete landscape design is a great place to explore and the opening of Croome Court (National Trust), an 18th century Palladian Style house in Bath Stone is now open to the public - a great addition to Worcestershire's heritage offer.

Historic Worcester is a great day out for visitors, particularly those who are interested in the history of the region. The Commandery is now a museum housing interesting displays and audio tours surrounding the history of the timber framed building. Worcester Cathedral is one England's most magnificent Cathedral's built in the 11th century with Royal Tombs and an ancient crypt. Worcester Porcelain Museum houses the finest and most extensive collections of Worcester Porcelain and The Greyfriars (National Trust) is a beautiful timbered framed building with a unique collection of items.

In the north of the county Avoncroft museum of Historic Buildings provides a wonderful insight into seven centuries of English Heritage, Forge Mill Needle Museums depicts Worcestershire's industrial heritage and the Severn Valley Railway, Britain's premier steam railway provides some of the best riverside scenery in the country.
