Sissinghurst Castle Garden is the twentieth century creation of two English aristocrats, Harold Nicolson and Vita Sackville-West. The garden is made in the ruins of a large Elizabethan house set in unspoilt Wealden countryside. Harold was a classicist, who liked formality and clean lines, and Vita, a romantic, who favoured profusion and surprise. It is the combination of these two apparent opposites which has made the garden such a major influence on late 20th and early 21st century garden design.

The library and Vita Sackville-West's writing room are open for viewing. Woodlands and Lake Walks are open all year (no charge). Lecture lunches are held Oct - Nov. Please phone for details. Bus link available from Staplehurst Train Station. Please phone for details. No pushchairs in gardens, (back carriers available). Only 2 wheelchairs in garden at a time. Unsuitable for large powered vehicles; if transfer to a manual wheelchair is impossible, please phone in advance.
