Hylands House is a beautiful Grade II* listed building, surrounded by over 550 acres of landscaped parkland, partly designed by Humphry Repton. Built c. 1730, the original house was a red brick Queen Anne style mansion – difficult to imagine from its appearance today!

Subsequent owners set about modernising and enlarging the property and added an East and West wing, along with a colonnaded portico and covered the house in white stucco, which produced the neo-classical house you see today.

< Chelmsford Borough Council bought the House and park in 1966 and, before the house succumbed completely to decay, embarked on a restoration programme in 1986.

Three phases of work have since taken place and the fourth phase was completed Easter 2003. Visitors will be able to marvel at the restoration of the neo Baroque style Banqueting Room, the beautiful East wing rooms with its exquisitely gilded Drawing Room dating from the early Victorian era. The striking marble Entrance Hall from Hylands’ Georgian period, along with the basement bringing to life the original Queen Anne House. A number of original features dating from that period can be seen in the basement, an interpretation area will also be housed in one of the basement rooms.

Hylands House offers a unique opportunity to view parts of the house yet to be restored through a viewing screen. An exhibition detailing the restoration work and the history of the house, along with its many interesting owners, is on display throughout the House.

Enjoy a tour of the House and take tea in our Tea Room before going to explore the Pleasure Gardens and surrounding parkland.
Group visits and guided tours are available on request as are Educational visits.

Hylands House also offers, throughout the year, a full programme of events from Shakespeare on the back lawn, to outdoor musical evenings to an intimate evening soiree.
