Home of the Duke of Hamilton (Scotland's Premier Peer)since 1947. The house, dating from before 1400, is situated in 460 acres, just 20 miles south east of Edinburgh and 1 mile south of the historic town of Haddington, set in the beautiful countryside of East Lothian.

The house was owned by the Maitlands, one of whom, William, was Secretary of State during the time of Mary Queen of Scots. The house was renamed Lennoxlove after the Duchess of Richmond and Lennox bequeathed money to her nephew, Lord Blantyre, to enable him to buy it on condition that it was called ‘Lennox’s Love to Blantyre’. The Duchess, known as La Belle Stewart and model for Britannia, was a favourite of King Charles II and two of his gifts to her, a Flemish tortoiseshell cabinet and a Boulle pewter and ebony worktable, are on display at Lennoxlove.

Also on display in the house is the silver casket which contained forged letters implicating Mary Queen of Scots in the murder of her husband Lord Darnley, a sapphire ring given to Lord John Hamilton just prior
to her execution and
a death mask said to
be hers.

The house is now home to the former Hamilton Palace collection of
furniture, paintings and porcelain, brought together over many years by the Hamiltons and in particular the 10th Duke and his father-in-law William Beckford. Lennoxlove houses an antique motocycle collection and also memorablia from Rudolph Hess's flight to Scotland;and the 14th Duke of Hamilton's first flight over Mount Everest.
