The Historic Dockyard Chatham is a unique, award winning maritime heritage attraction which celebrates its 25th Anniversary in 2009. Set in an 80 acre estate with stunning Georgian and Victorian architecture, the exciting maritime galleries and attractions are brought to life by costumed guides.
Through the historic warships’ audio tours - available on the Victorian Naval Sloop HMS Gannet (1878) and the Second World War Destroyer HMS Cavalier (1944) – visitors go on a voyage of discovery and ‘meet’ characters who tell stories of life on board. Knowledgeable guides lead tours of HM Submarine Ocelot (1962), the last submarine built for the Royal Navy at Chatham.
An imposing and emotive bronze monument stands alongside HMS Cavalier. This, together with the ship, forms the National Destroyer Memorial - the official designated memorial to the 142 Royal Navy destroyers sunk during the Second World War and over 11,000 men who lost their lives as a result.
Visitors have the opportunity to make their own piece of rope and will discover why rope was so important to the Royal Navy in the Age of Sail on the new Victorian Ropery Tour. Led by a costumed guide and set in 1875, the tour culminates with the dramatic view of the mile long Ropewalk where rope is still made today.
In 3 Slip – The BIG Store visitors can feast their eyes on the awe inspiring wooden roof structure of this immense covered slip and find really BIG ‘things’ from the collections of The Historic Dockyard and Royal Engineers Museum Gillingham. The beautiful walled Commissioner’s Garden offers the perfect setting for a moment of secluded peace and quiet during a fascinating day’s visit!
The sights, sounds and smells of the dockyard of 1758 are recreated in the Wooden Walls gallery; maritime history is discovered in the inspiring Museum of the Royal Dockyard and heroic rescues of RNLI crews are re-lived in the Lifeboat! gallery – just some of the other attractions at The Historic Dockyard.
With so much to see and do at The Historic Dockyard, the 12 month ticket offers unlimited return visits and is incredible value for money. (Terms and conditions apply).
