The National Trust for Scotland
Nobody can doubt the extraordinary variety and richness of Scotland’s heritage and nowhere is it better shown than in the properties owned and cared for by Scotland’s leading conservation charity, The National Trust for Scotland.
The Trust was established in 1931 to act as a guardian of Scotland’s magnificent heritage of architectural, scenic and historic treasures, and encourage public access to them. In its care are over 100 varied properties embracing castles and mansion houses, glorious gardens, historic sites and battlefields such as Bannockburn and Culloden, islands, countryside, waterfalls, coastline, birthplaces of famous Scots and fascinating industrial heritage sites including two water mills and a printing works! Each year the properties open for visitors to enjoy the huge variety in them – plant collections, paintings, silver, furniture and porcelain.
Most properties hold special events throughout the year and these range from craft fairs and concerts to guided walks led by countryside rangers and expert gardeners. A free ‘What’s On’ guide is available from the address below. Many properties also have shops, with a wide range of high-quality items, tearooms and restaurants, offering the best of Scottish fare, and other facilities like adventure playgrounds, making them an ideal day out for all the family.
As a charity, The National Trust for Scotland depends on the subscriptions of its members, donations and legacies to keep its properties open and to continue its conservation work. Amongst its benefits, membership allows free access to properties for one year – ideal if you are touring Scotland this summer.
