Ever since the discovery of the Chalybeate Spring over 400 years ago by a young aristocrat, Dudley Lord North, visitors have been coming to Royal Tunbridge Wells. Once a magnet for the gentry and members of the Georgian Royal family, the elegance and atmosphere of this bygone era still remain in Royal Tunbridge Wells today.
The health-giving waters of the Spring still flow and are served in the traditional manner by a costumed Dipper during the summer. The Pantiles, the famous colonnaded walkway, where the aristocracy once promenaded, is now home to a wonderful selection of high quality boutiques, antique shops, bars and cafés. Visitors still come to admire the fine architecture, stroll along the Pantiles and experience this charming historic town.
Shopping is a major attraction of Royal Tunbridge Wells. Over 35 antiques shops in and around the town, a wide range of high street names, Royal Victoria Palace – a modern undercover shopping centre with over 100 retail names, and an exceptional selection of small, independent shops, particularly in the old High Street, make Royal Tunbridge Wells a shopper's delight.
Tunbridge Wells Museum and Art Gallery houses the world’s most extensive collection of Tunbridge ware, as well as fascinating collections of costumes, toys and local history.
Royal Tunbridge Wells lies in some of the most rural and picturesque countryside in the South East. Oast houses, rolling green hills, orchards and hop gardens all feature prominently in this part of the Garden of England. Peace and quiet and the country life – quaint country pubs, pretty Kent villages and leafy country lanes – are all part of the course.
This corner of Kent is a paradise for history, and expecially garden lovers. Hever Castle, Penshurst Place, Sissinghurst Castle Garden, Groombridge Place Gardens and Chartwell, to name a few, are all within easy reach, as well as a wonderful selection of smaller Lesser known gardens, just as beautiful as their larger, more famous counterparts.
