The Eden Project

Historic Restormel -
The Daphne Du Maurier Festival
8th May-17th May
The Daphne du Maurier Festival is based in and around the scenic Port of Fowey on the south coast of Cornwall - the Cornish Riviera - renowned for its mild climate. The numerous gardens nearby with sub-tropical and tender plants bear testament to the favoured situation of the Cornish Riviera.
In addition to the Festival, there are many quality attractions within a short distance, such as :
• The natural delights of the coast and countryside can be explored at any time or as part of the themed Walks within the Festival events.
• Naturally, Fowey itself is a most attractive town, well worth discovering in some detail. Around St Austell Bay, both the Georgian harbour of Charlestown, built to export China Clay, and the working fishing village of Mevagissey will provide a great deal of interest.
• The National Trust's property - Lanhydrock House and Garden - offers a splendid view of Victorian life in a country house, a real 'Upstairs, Downstairs'. Enjoy its superb garden, full of early flowering shrubs, and the paths through the wooded estate to the River Fowey.
• The amazing Eden Project - including the largest greenhouses, or Biomes, in the world - recreates Humid Tropics and Warm Temperate Climates here in Cornwall. The most recent addition is 'The Core' - its new education building. Described as being 'like a cathedral', the Core's roof structure follows the Fibonacci principle of nature's spirals, most noticeable in pine cones and sunflower heads
• The Lost Gardens of Heligan - a garden that 'went to sleep', was re-discovered in 1990 and has been restored to its Victorian excellence.
• The Mevagissey to Fowey Ferry runs from Whitehouse Quay, a 35 minute trip across St Austell Bay, giving views of the lovely coastline. Visit the working fishing village of Mevagissey and walk up to Heligan Gardens !.
* Pine Lodge Gardens & Nursery - a highly rated, 'plantsman's garden', with rare and unusual plants, water features and a Japanese garden within its 30-acre estate.
