Small but perfectly formed, therein lies the beauty of Exeter. From its stunning Cathedral to its Historic Quayside, all the best bits are within walking distance of each other.
The Historic Quayside is a ten-minute walk from the Cathedral and is one of the most attractive areas of the city, popular with visitors for its fascinating history, interesting architecture and recreational activities. Whilst there, take a trip to the Quay House Visitor Centre - it covers 2,000 years of Exeter's history in just 15 minutes! The centre is housed in an historic building dating from 1680-1 and also offers tourist information.
Discover more about Exeter's fascinating past on a free Red Coat Guided Tour. Options range from Ghosts and Legends to exploring the Catacomb by torchlight! Most tours last 90 minutes and depart from outside the Royal Clarence Hotel in Cathedral Yard or from outside the Quay House Visitor Centre.
Visit Exeter's library to enjoy displays from the Royal Albert Memorial Museum (closed for redevelopment until 2010) and hands-on gallery activities, or explore beneath Exeter's streets on a guided tour of Exeter's Underground Passages. The passages were built in the medieval period to bring clean, piped, drinking water in to the city. A visit starts with the new exhibition centre, which features a full scale passages model and magic carpet fly-through the passages.
A trip to Exeter would not be complete without a visit to Exeter's magnificent Cathedral. The building still features two massive towers that were part of the original Norman building when it was consecrated in 1133. The Cathedral remains one of the finest examples of decorated Gothic work in England today.
