Historic Chelmsford
Chelmsford can trace its origins to Roman times, when a settlement called "Caesaromagus" grew up near the River Can. The settlement on the main road from London was an important site. The Saxons settled nearby and possibly gave the river Chelmer, its ford and the town their names.
In 1199 a new town was established and King John granted it the right to hold a weekly market. By 1250, Chelmsford was acknowledged as County Town of Essex, a position it holds to the current day. Guglielmo Marconi established the world's first radio factory here in 1896, with the first radio broadcast taking place in 1920.
An insight into the town's rich heritage and fascinating history are displayed at Chelmsford Museum and Essex Regiment Museum. Chelmsford's attractive 15th Century Cathedral, impressive Grade II neo-classical villa "Hylands House" and landscaped park on the town outskirts, are also popular visitor attractions.
Picturesque villages surround Chelmsford providing a wealth of historic buildings to investigate. Marsh Farm Country Park, Hyde Hall Garden are also well worth a visit.
