Hotels in Aberdeenshire, Scotland.
Further on towards the north east and Royal Deeside you will surely wish to visit - the private home of the Queen and the Royal Family at Balmoral Castle, with the gardens open to the public in summer. Balmoral in Ballater was purchased by Queen Victoria in 1848 whilst Braemar, a fortress situated in the Cairngorms on Royal Deeside, Duff House and Ballindalloch Castle in Banffshire and Delgattie which dates back to 1030 are all worth going out of your way for a visit. Nearby, at the eastern end of the Cairngorm Mountains, the village of Braemar, venue for the Braemar Gathering, the best known of the Highland games.
Sixty miles along Deeside to Aberdeen, the award winning ‘Britain in Bloom’ city, endowed with public gardens and parks, granite architecture and wedding its ancient culture of fishing and farming to the modern oil industry. From the overnight trip to the Shetland Isles is an ideal introduction to Scotland’s network of passenger and vehicle ferries most of which operate on the west coast.
Aberdeen is also a base to embark on the only Malt Whiskey Trail in the world through the glens of the Livet and the Spey and their many famous distilleries. You can follow the signposts with their distinct ‘pagoda roof’ symbol and taste some of Scotland’s finest whisky. The distlilleries include Glenlivet, Cardhu, Glen Grant, Glenfiddich Starthisla and Glenfarclas. It might be best to leave the car at home.
