Hertfordshire is one of the home counties and situated just north of London with Essex to the east, Cambridgeshire and Bedfordshire to the north and Buckinghamshire to the west.
With a population of around 1,000,000, Hertford, Stevenage, Welwyn and St Albans are the principal towns with the latter previously known as the Roman city of Verulamium, the second biggest town in Roman Britain after Londinium.
