Railways in Durham County, England.
County Durham is situated in the north east corner of England with Yorkshire to the south, Cumbria to the west, Northumberland to the north and Tyne & Wear to the east. The county of Durham is split into 7 districts - Durham City, Teesdale, Wear Valley, Easington, Sedgefield, Derwentwater and Chester-Le-Street, Durham Cathedral, a World Heritage site and over 900 years old, is the finest example of Norman church architecture in England with its awesome columns and rounded arches. The fascinating city was home to the ancestors of George Washington (John Washington was one of Durham’s ‘Prince Bishops’ - medieval bishops who ruled the whole region like kings). The Old Hall in the town of Washington, near Sunderland, was home to the family from the 12th century until 1613. Further in the country we have Teesdale, England’s breathtaking ‘ Last Wilderness” and the lovely Wear Valley.
